G-School: Affirmation of Observations

And I am just under one week from completing my first year of graduate school. off the top of my head:
  • managed to surprise myself several times at what a self-directed adult i'm becoming
  • no one is going to or even try to speak for me.
  • being persuasive involves more listening than talking
  • i don't have to be mean when speaking my mind (aka giving some one a piece of my mind.ha.)
  • stories tell themselves if you invest enough time and patience.
  • although i'm not old i'm certainly not young.
  • kayaking is like baseball in that if you aren't participating, it's incredibly boring. (vid will be up soon)
  • bleeding money makes me physically ill.
  • websites like gawker and readit and thought catalog annoy the fuck out of me. it trains people to be satisfied with experiencing things second-hand.
  • the fear of failure is far less scary than complacency. fear is just as strong a motivator for action as it is immobilizing.
  • i trust myself above anyone else.
  • never hike part c of the billy goat trail at great falls barefoot toting 15 pounds of camera gear. please, don't do that to yourself.
  • i feel secure and confident with my technical ability on camera and in photoshop. soon fcp too.
  • when i hear people use the word "interested/ing" without a description or any elaboration i think several things: a. they probably have no idea what they just looked at b. are annoying c. usually just like the sound of their own voice d. don't know what that word means
  • for noticeable gain(s) to be had, I have to give a little more in the beginning than I usually want to.
  • my two best friends from college are getting married to two amazing and deserving people this summer. i love all of them and am so grateful to have them in my life.
  • to know what it is to be "together" but not "committed"
  • the power of an apology should never be overrated.
  • everything when a 28 year old man behaves like an emotionally irrational and stubborn fourteen year old boy is hilarious.
  • coffee makes me one seriously anxious bitch. move, i gottsa get shit done.
  • had the time of my life working with the 8th grade punk rock band - pictures will be up soon.
  • anytime that is not spent doing the work that needs to be done is wasted time, but i try not to get all tied up in figuring out what is actually wasted time from what isn't because that has proven to be more often than not a waste of time.lol
  • pretty sure that if kids were to become an option, i'd have them.
  • committed to a thesis! post adoption resources within the district
  •  the fact that there is some one always out there who is better than me at whatever i do is what keeps me going.

  2. This is a great list. I especially appreciate your observations on the word "interesting." It sounds like your first year was quite the success!
