Tenant Tail 2: Children These Days

I love Glover Park becuase of all the really steep hills that surround the house that I was sitting. Another reason that area appeals to me so much is that there are very serious walkers. Running with a fourpack is not a requirement- zero pressure to own the expensive running shoes and matching outfit and ipod holder. It's a total family freindly nieghborhood with young mothers in every array of afterwork states out with thier strollers. I guess it's assumed that if one has enough money to live there at all then one has a right to walk out of his/her $1600+ a month flat or row house in whatever state they want that is as long as it is in all reasonable good taste.
My routine was to get off the D1 then go for a brisk 45 minute uphill walk sporting a faded high school t-shirt and cheap track shorts with lime green Brooks.

One evening, at the begining of my walk I saw a tall and lean and compliment worthy buff middle 30 something round the corner of my street in all spandex and high performance running shoes. Her face was flushed and she had a very clear look of accomplishment that faded away quickly as her and I both took notice to the small 6 or 7 year old boy making his way up the steep hill she had just sprinted. Dragging alongside him was a heavy looking batman themed tricycle.

She jogged in place as he made the climb to get to the bend she had completed moments before. I wouldn't say that she looked annoyed more than she did appear bored with the wait. As soon as he got to the top drenched in sweat, his little sun burnt face accentuated by his dirty blond hair paused to catch his breath and chirp "Mom, when we get home I think I want to play on the couch while you make hot chocolate and popcorn for the movie. Can we do that?"
"Of course, but we have to make it home first. I promise we are almost there." She said as she slowly started to move forward.
"Mom, wait... Im tired."
"It's a straight flat shot to the house from now on, dear- the faster we get there the sooner we start the movie. Now come on." She caught sight of me walking towards them and smiled. I smiled back and made a sympathetic little comment towards the child that was now leaning on his bike.
Slowly he started following her again, maintaining the 2 meter separation that is in proportion to his short legs and her long musclular ones.
A whimper escaped his mouth causing her to stop and face him, now slightly annoyed, to reply, "You got to peddle the whole time and I had to run.; now I know you can make it home."

As I begin to pass them she gives me a "Children these days." look and smiled as she turned to start jogging again. I politely acknowledged and gave a pleasant "Have Good Evening" that was answered by an energetic, overthe shoulder " You too!".
